My name is Anne Marie and I am a daughter, sister, Aunt, friend to many - and mommy to my 11 year old kitty, Shelby (I 'm sure she will find her way onto this blog, eventually). I am Web Developer by day, TV/cook and exercise junkie by night, fun-fashionista-bargain hunter on the weekends, and Type 1 diabetic for life!
I became diabetic when I turned 30 years old. I recognized the signs immediately but ignored them because NOT a soul in my family has diabetes. I was always urinating, losing weight and always thirsty. You definitely go through denial at some point, as this went on for at least 3-4 months.
Then one beautiful July morning, I was getting ready for work and after my regular coffee and shower, and noticed I was dragging myself around, literally. By 2pm, I felt dehydrated and was vomiting. I could not put my finger on WHERE the pain was but I knew something was very wrong. I called 911 soon after.
When asked 'what was wrong' - I kept saying I did not know, but felt terrible all over. In the Ambulance, I was asked 'do you have diabetes?' ..No? Well, my sugar was 587 and I was diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis - DKA. (It is very important to know the signs/symptoms of this - as it is very life threatening.) I was not a 'Juvenile' so I definitely thought I was Type 2 at first thought. Three out of four nurses did agree when I asked there opinion.
Finally....the Doctor came. Tests showed I was Type 1 diabetic and will need Insulin for 'the rest of my life.' I just stared with no reaction... I did not know what to say. I did not feel sad, I did not feel angry. I immediately felt shock and.. .. OK TIME TO GET BETTER!
Anyways, that is my short story :) I would like to help others with my Blog and, in return, receive advice from people with Type 1. I will ramble on and on about Diabetes Type 1, so If this has not bore you so far .. thanks in advance and come back daily!
